Transforming Healthcare Access in Tharparkar, Pakistan

In June 2024, Paani Project launched a Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) in Tharparkar, Sindh, Pakistan, a region where healthcare is almost non-existent. This initiative was started to address the critical healthcare needs of remote villages that are far removed from any medical facilities. Our MMU has already reached 7 villages, providing essential medical services to over 900 individuals and conducting health awareness sessions for 1,500 residents.

Tharparkar Health Crisis: Tharparkar is one of Pakistan’s most impoverished regions, with extremely limited access to healthcare services. The area faces a severe shortage of medical facilities and healthcare professionals. Many villages are isolated, with the nearest medical centers often hours away. Public transportation to these areas is infrequent, coming only once a week. As a result, those with urgent medical needs can suffer for days or even weeks before receiving care. This lack of access to timely medical attention has led to high rates of mortality, particularly among infants, children, and mothers, and a prevalence of preventable diseases.

Our Impact So Far:

  • 7 Villages Reached: Our Mobile Medical Unit has made healthcare accessible in remote areas where it was previously unavailable.
  • 900+ Patients Treated: We have provided treatment for basic diseases and medical conditions to over 900 individuals.
  • 1,500+ Health Awareness Sessions: Our team has conducted health awareness sessions, educating over 1,500 residents on disease prevention and health maintenance.
  • Challenges: Villages in Tharparkar are isolated, and residents often have to travel over 2 hours to reach the nearest hospital. The public transport system is unreliable, with services available only once a week. This situation leaves many in desperate need, facing the possibility of waiting days to receive medical attention, leading to worsened conditions or even death.

Current Needs:

While we have successfully launched this initiative, we face significant ongoing costs, including:

  • Staff Salaries: Continued support is needed to retain our dedicated team of doctors and nursing staff.
  • Medicines and Supplies: We require a steady supply of medicines and medical equipment to treat the residents effectively.
  • Recurring Expenses: To keep our Mobile Medical Unit operational, we need ongoing funding for vehicle maintenance, fuel, and other logistics.
  • How You Can Help: Your support is vital to sustaining this life-saving initiative. By contributing to our recurring expenses, you can help us continue to provide essential healthcare services to the most vulnerable populations in Tharparkar.
